INSTITUTE HISTORY
THE SOCIAL & LEARNING INSTITUTE FOR THE DISADVANTAGED, INC. celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2006. The Institute was incorporated in 1976 as a not-for-profit, non-sectarian, non-discriminatory organization. It offers a unique educational experience for the mentally challenged young adult 18 years of age and over, whom no longer able to attend public education or participate in vocational sheltered employment programs.

Some challenged individuals are not accepted in programs because of their inability to conform to a regulated independent vocational environment, or because of limited governmental funding preventing expansion and inclusion of all handicapped adults, therefore requiring another such program which is privately funded and able to include clients on the basis of need rather than availability and offer individual one-on-one client teacher relationship.

It was the year 1976 that the State funded program at the LaPorte County Therapy Center "Adult Activities Class," came to a close. Students attending this program found solace in being with their peers, expanding their social skills, and enhancing their academic skills.

State funding for the former program ceased 1973-1976, as this was only to be a three-year pilot experimental program to test the waters for later vocational placement. Unfortunately, there were individuals that did not conform to the new opportunity that was to replace the original program they so enjoyed and learned the past three years.
It took several months of hard work and fund raising by a small group of parents with leadership from Marguerite Gardner and James Guerrucci. Countless volunteers offered services and talents to cover the legal mechanics required to begin a institute. Senator Anita Bowser served as liaison to obtain non-profit statue and incorporation. She also is the person that selected the name of the organization we celebrate today.

The group began to meet in a garage. This home base offered and opportunity to gain stability and lay plans during the summer months while weather conditions were favorable and paperwork was being completed for Incorporation.

The Presbyterian Church offered to provide classroom space for this new school rent-free as a community mission and service. September 1976 five students, one teacher and several volunteers set up the first formal class. The fund raising continued, equipment was donated, students enrolled, staff was added, community supported and the rest is history.

Today we have four staff, 23 students, 6 part-time volunteers, a strong community base with numerous resources via sister agencies that work side by side with council and respect.

When we look back over the past 31 years, and think of the struggles we had trying to make a dream come true for challenged individuals that would receive enrichment and self worth, I can not believe the time has traveled pass so quickly. I remember dear ones that made a difference and hold special places in our hearts, no longer living but will be remembered always for their efforts, love and "MADE A MIRICLE HAPPEN!"
