"My 12 years of teaching Montessori has prepared me for the unique experience of teaching within a range of abilities and levels in one environment. While the mentally challenged adults at the Institute have individual needs and capacities different in some ways than those of children, the need for coordination, practice, concentration skills, and sense of order are the same. Positive reinforcement is a universal key that unlocks the best of an individual's potential.

TRICIA has been the Coordinating Teacher since 2000. Her credentials include a BA in English Literature, Indiana University, Bloomington; Pre-Primary Montessori Credentials, DePaul Universitey; Post Grad Purdue University, Northwest.
The methods of observation and redirectioning behavior emphazied in Montessori can be applied to the mentally challenged classroom, as well as promotion of independence. These result in increased self-esteem for the adults at the SOCIAL AND LEARNING INSTITUTE, which in turn fosters inner direction and productive behavior

Karen brings to the Social and Learning Institute her many years of life and work
experience. She was employed by Indiana Bell as a secretary, directory assistance,
and switchboard operator. She worked briefly in the medical field, owned and managed
her own card and gift store, and retired after ten years of service with Estee Lauder & Co.
Her hobbies include gardening, reading, and enjoys being “Grandma” to her three grandchildren.
“Working part-time at the Social and Learning Institute is my greatest joy. These special adults ask for so little and give so much back in return.”
